Bending the arm on the sear has it's risks. The nose of the sear is hardened and somewhat brittle.Coat the entire circumference of the barrel in a generous area around the sight. Solder won't stick to the soap stone so make sure everything is well covered around the sight. Remove the clamped sight and "tin" the sight base with regular low temp plumber's solder. "Tin" the area on the barrel where the sight will set.

Russ worked 3rd shift at a GM plant. Whatever metal the plant was casting is what he used. I built a flintlock using a Russ Hamm lock.Sometimes, in the field, the ramrod isn't stuck that bad and you can make a little jig out of metal plate with a 3/8" hole (if that is the diameter of your ramrod). This little plate can be about 3/4" wide, 3" long, 1/8" thick and the hole at one end. Traditions .50 Kentucky rifle percussion kit. It's not all fancy schmantzy, but I've wanted to build this particular rifle since the mid 80's. Had the .45 Cal CVA kit of the same type when I was in the Marines, but didn't have the tools nor the smarts at the time to build it. M.My small tree critters have always been dropped with a .32 or .36, and they excel on small game. With a .40 all shots need to be at the head/neck area even with very light loads. Mid-body hits might be okay, you'll just have to see. Test the loads at 25 yards, that's the average range for shots in the squirrel woods.The old standard for 12 gauge full choke was .040" constriction. Modern guns with modern loads really don't need that much constriction but with muzzleloaders we still are duplicating the old loadings. So the recess for a full choke 12 is .020" deep, which of course enlarges the bore diameter by the required .040".

Both rifles are Investarm rifles, the flintlock is a Lyman Great Plains Rifle and the percussion is a Cabela's .58 caliber Hawken. I'm thinking about swapping out the percussion breech plug on one rifle for the flintlock breech plug on another. The flintlock is .50 caliber and the percussion is .58 caliber. The outside dimensions are the same.
